Paper Lanterns Mark End to Lunar New Year Festivities
Want to see more photos from lantern festivals throughout Asia? Browse the #lanternfestival hashtag, and the Fulfillment Amphitheatre (圓滿戶外劇場), Taipei Lantern Festival (台北燈節) and Minato Park (湊公園) location pages.
On the 15th day of the lunar new year, countries throughout Asia mark the end of lunar new year festivities by lighting elaborate paper lanterns. The Lantern Festival is variously known as Shangyuan or Yuanxiao (China), Chap Goh Meh (Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore), Tết Thượng Nguyên (Vietnam) and Koshōgatsu (Japan).
These festivals mark the first full moon of the lunar new year, and while their exact origin is unknown, releasing lanterns typically symbolizes letting go of the past and embracing the new year. The day also serves to build community and goodwill within and between families.

Watch the Outcry Trailer

Outcry the Play

What happens when you scream, but no one hears? This question is posed in the stage play “Outcry” written by Thais Francis. “Outcry” intertwines the lives of Emmett Till, Trayvon Martin, Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell, Nicole Bell and Mamie Till. These individuals were either killed unjustly or are the loved ones of said victims. The play is set in Nicole Bell’s ( fiancé of slain Sean Bell who was killed the night before their wedding) dream a space void of time and structure, thus allowing them to interact, laugh together and pose questions for each other.  Through movement, and Shakespeare this play shows how dreams can become nightmares, which turn into reality.

THEATRE WORTH SEEING……..Fam to the show Thais Francis is remixing the way stories are being told. Read on and get your seat mi Gente!

Short Summary
Do you remember what you were doing when you heard about Trayvon Martin’s death? Remember the hoodies? The tweets? The marches? Do you remember how you felt in 2006 when you found out Sean Bell was killed the night before his wedding? Do you remember Amadou Diallo? Emmett Till? Do you know what happened to the muderers of each victim?
…Nothing.
Is anyone talk about these stories anymore?
… Not really.
We forget. Until it happens again.
My name is Thais and I graduated from NYU this past May, where I studied Drama. I wouldn’t say I’m a playwright, but I am a woman who had something to say so I wrote a play. This cycle of prejudice continues, when people are ignored, judged, and killed due to the color of their skin and Outcry is taking a step towards ending it.The play is set in a space void of time and structure, allowing the characters to interact, laugh and pose questions for each other. The play explores the idea of screaming and not being heard, which is paralleled to crying out against injustice in our society and being ignored.

Enjoy this interview I came across. I never knew about this latina sister.

A chat with Jillian Mercado: on Tumblr about Tumblr with a Tumblr celebrity
I met Jillian Mercado when I lived in New York City during the height of KONY 2012. We arranged to hang out multiple times, but the craziness of that season made me be “that guy” and reschedule too many times. Luckily, we finally connected at The High Line. We chatted about IC, her history of being a serious force to be reckoned with during our events, her involvement in the fashion world, and how much we both loved America’s Next Top Model.
After I moved away, Jillian began being quite busy being Tumblr famous (she’ll explain.) Then, some serious loser stole her wheelchair. (WHO DOES THAT?) With her new-found popularity and life-long pleasant disposition that already endeared her to thousands, she was able to raise enough funds online via indiegogo to get her dream chair. Another win for humanity.
I e-mailed Jillian some questions about her hectic schedule, her obsession with Tumblr, and her involvement with Invisible Children.
Jillian Mercado. You’ve gotten quite Tumblr famous since we last saw each other. Describe how that happened and what it means for your current life. It’s actually pretty funny - everything just happened literally overnight. I was basically going, I would say probably rushing, to a fashion show I was a little late for, and I saw a friend of mine that was among the photographers taking street style photos. He came over and asked me how I was doing and I told him that I was running to a show. He then asked to take a quick photo of me and my outfit, to which of course I said yes. Later that night, someone saw that photo on Tumblr and reblogged it. To which it was blogged under the “fashion” category, and soon enough, the notes were rushing in. This was last season of fashion week and it went from 5,000 notes to 10,000 notes to 15,000. Today it’s up to 20,282!! It meant/means more than I thought it would. I was very self-conscious of taking photos full-length and to see how many people appreciate me for who I am has extremely helped my self-esteem. I have battled with a lot of acceptance to how others take me, but I challenge myself every day to confront those problems. When this all happened, I fully was myself, and I think I graduated from being scared to just fully loving who I am no matter what. Judging from your Instagram and Twitter, you appear to always be on the grind. What are your current and upcoming projects? Slash, we see you hinting about something with Elle UK. I wouldn’t hate any further insight on that…I love keeping myself busy in any project that I can get my hands on, and I will definitely go for it. With that said, I actually have many projects going on right now, which is amazing. First of all, we are interviewing some designers for fashion week on PMC magazine and wrapping up the WeTheUrban Magazine Issue 6, which will be launching during fashion week. So there are a lot of photoshoots going on - I have had about four photoshoots this month already. My first one was actually on January 1, so talk about a great way to start the new year! This week will probably be my busiest because I have photoshoots back to back until next Tuesday, so I haven’t had a weekend for basically the whole month of January. About the Elle UK shoot - one other thing that I can maybe hint at is that the month I was born, the issue will come out :D APRIL! Perfect. What is it about Tumblr that you think draws such an artistic, niche community?First off, I think what drew me to Tumblr was the easy access you have - you don’t have to know much about websites because Tumblr makes it so simple for you. Secondly, I think that our generation is basically all on Tumblr, so we have the same interests as far as pop culture, the arts, or music. You also get easy feedback because it’s just from reblogging and liking, so they make that even easier for you to get a faster turnaround or audience views. You can pretty much get obsessed with Tumblr, as I just confessed that I am… What are your three favorite blogs on Tumblr and why? When I first read this question, I thought it was going to be really simple, until I looked through who I was following - it is actually harder than I thought it would be. I have at least five tabs opened because I started off with twenty. I love architectural blogs and vintage blogs, so I have a bunch of those. My favorite bloggers will probably have to go to my friends because we share the same interests.
http://hadarlikestoblog.tumblr.com // He is a photographer, and a really close friend of mine. He usually takes the best pictures of me because he’s so talented.
http://heyshambles.tumblr.com // Her blog is probably the cutest I have followed. We share completely almost the same interests, and she’s awesome, and I can spend hours on her blog.
http://teilzallie.tumblr.com // She’s another friend of mine and truly amazing. I don’t even know what to say because I really enjoy her blog. We met at a concert and we’ve been friends ever since. Probably the best way to meet a friend is at a concert, so it’s a win-win. Also I really enjoy reblogging the hell out of everything she postsYou have been a dedicated supporter of Invisible Children for a long while now. How did you first find out about the cause and what makes you stick with it?Actually thinking about it, I really have been with Invisible Children for a really long time, which is mind-blowing. Time flies when you’re having fun! I started with Invisible Children through a funny coincidence. I heard about it through Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy. He was promoting Invisible Children and talking about how amazing this nonprofit was and how much it meant to him. Back in the day, I was a Fall Out Boy fan, so I checked the site out. Needless to say, I fell head over heels for the company and then needed to join. What has kept me with Invisible Children is how magically they made a nonprofit fun, inspiring and hopeful. Usually when people talk about nonprofits, it’s always depressing and, in a way, kind of boring. So when Invisible Children sparked something in me, I knew that this was an organization that was dedicated to my generation and was basically run through the youth, which I thought that not a lot of nonprofits do. I would only describe it as extremely refreshing.Music and art obviously play a massive role in social movements. Where do you see fashion fitting into that?I think without music or art, there wouldn’t be fashion. I think you can turn that into a lot of different possibilities - without fashion there wouldn’t be music. The way an artist or a musician presents themselves also has to do with what they’re wearing, which is where fashion comes in; it’s a form of expression - which art and music also have in common.Any parting words for the Tumblr + Invisible Children community? How much time do you actually have? First off Invisible Children has truly changed my life, and by that, I mean I have met so many great people through this nonprofit. I have experienced so many things that will truly mark my life forever. I think I have also had every possible emotion through my times at Invisible Children - we have all cried together, laughed together, and … slept together? Well that was at The Rescue and Displace Me events - where we all slept in a huge, huge park overnight. So the Invisible Children community has given more to me then anyone can ask for, and I will forever be grateful for the team for just being. For Tumblr, all I can say is that I want to gather each and every one of you and literally hug you forever.

I wouldn’t hate any further insight on that…

I love keeping myself busy in any project that I can get my hands on, and I will definitely go for it.

About the Elle UK shoot - one other thing that I can maybe hint at is that the month I was born, the issue will come out :D

Floating Villages of the Tonlé Sap (ទន្លេសាប) in Cambodia
Want to see more photos of the famous floating villages? Visit the Tonle Sap Lake and Floating Village location pages.
Over the course of the year, Southeast Asia’s largest lake, the Tonlé Sap (ទន្លេសាប) in Cambodia, can fluctuate from depths as low as two meters to as high as 14 meters. The inhabitants of the Tonlé Sap’s banks survive this ebb and flow by building floating villages. Their houses, churches, police departments and post offices are built on stilts, they navigate their neighborhoods in boats (children sometimes use large buckets!), and they construct elaborate traps to catch fish as the tide drains. Check out the photos taken by some of the intrepid Instagrammers who’ve made it to the lake.
